Although this was a small addition, the impacts were transformative to this historic 1820’s home in Historic Summerville, South Carolina. The previous kitchen was small and dark with limited connection to the living spaces of the home. The owners asked for an open gathering kitchen that was bathed in natural light and with a strong connection to the historic house. This was accomplished by infilling a small gap or hyphen on the exterior façade and removing multiple interior walls. The interior of the existing kitchen was fully replaced with new cabinets, countertops, appliances, and fixtures. A small powder room was added and the laundry room was reconfigured.

Great care was taken to ensure that the new addition was sympathetic and harmonious with the existing historic structure. The result is an addition that looks like it could have been there forever.
