The small pool bungalow is a new building that is part of a collection of 5 residential structures that make up the boutique hotel: 86 Cannon Charleston.  The bungalow contains one guestroom on each of the two levels and a common restroom and wet bar for the pool.

The goal for the project was to create a new building that was harmonious with the historic setting.  Yet at the same time, we felt it was important for the new building to have materials and details that distinguished it from the surrounding historic structures.  For example, the 4 historic structures are clad in wood clapboard siding with wood piazzas.  Whereas the new bungalow is clad in stucco with a wrought metal balcony.

For inspiration, we studied other smaller structures throughout the peninsula such as carriage houses, town houses and other small homes.  From these studies we found that these small structures often had the following characteristics:  simple massing, symmetrical fenestration, and handsome details.  These studies gave us a great start for the design of the bungalow.

The result was a simple rectangular shaped 2-story structure clad in stucco.  We used a hipped roof clad in standing seam, hand-crimped copper.  The hip shape was important to help diminish the scale since this 2-story structure was located directly behind a 1-story historic structure.  The pink color of the stucco was inspired by the pink stucco of the French Huguenot Church.  A simple pattern of windows and doors with a symmetrical front façade helped create a balanced and pleasing façade.  The beauty of the bungalow is heightened by the finer details such as the ornate metal railings, wood louvered window shutters, copper lanterns and reclaimed wooden corbels at the side entrance.
