Originally obscured by an unsympathetic renovation, the historic home at 85 Spring Street was carefully restored through extensive archival research and on-site investigation. Historic Sanborn maps and physical evidence uncovered during construction confirmed the home's original two-story piazza, allowing it to be faithfully reconstructed using historically appropriate proportions, materials, and detailing inspired by Charleston precedents.
Serving as both owner and architect, Steve Ramos led the transformation of the property into a thoughtfully designed boutique hospitality residence while restoring one of its defining architectural features. The project reflects Ramos Architecture & Design's approach to historic preservation—combining rigorous research, contextual design, and craftsmanship to breathe new life into Charleston's architectural heritage. In recognition of its thoughtful restoration, the project received a 2021 Carolopolis Award from the Preservation Society of Charleston.
