Lisbon Photo Dump: The Beauty Beyond the Landmarks

I recently spent some time exploring Lisbon and Cascais, Portugal, and came back with a camera roll full of architecture, streetscapes, and little details that caught my eye along the way.

As an architect, I naturally gravitate toward buildings. But this trip reminded me that sometimes the most memorable design isn't the building itself—it's everything around it.

Looking Down in Cascais

One of my favorite discoveries was in Cascais, the beautiful seaside town just outside Lisbon.

The ocean is incredible, of course, but what really caught my attention was the sidewalk.

Cascais is filled with traditional Portuguese stone mosaics made from black basalt and white limestone. Every plaza, sidewalk, and promenade seems to have its own pattern.

There's something almost dreamlike about walking through the streets and seeing these intricate designs under your feet. The craftsmanship, repetition, scale, and geometry are remarkable.

It's a great reminder that architecture and urban design aren't limited to buildings. The streets, sidewalks, plazas, landscaping, and small details all contribute to how we experience a city.

Architecture Is Everywhere

That's probably what I enjoyed most about this photo dump.

Instead of focusing only on the famous landmarks, I found myself photographing the things that are easy to overlook—the paving patterns, facades, doors, balconies, streets, and the way old and new buildings come together.

That's what I love about traveling as an architect. You don't necessarily have to visit a famous building to find inspiration. Sometimes you just need to slow down and look around.

Lisbon and Cascais are full of those moments.

And that's one of the things I try to share through Buildings Are Cool: the idea that good design is everywhere if you take the time to notice it.
