Alteño Charleston: A New Chapter for The Charlee

Charleston, this one is going to be a game changer.

Construction is in the home stretch at Alteño Charleston, part of The Charlee at 89 Cannon Street, and I'm excited to see this space getting closer to opening its doors.

For me, one of the most rewarding parts of architecture and development is watching a space transition from drawings and construction documents into a place that people will actually experience. Alteño is a great example of that process.

A Taste of Jalisco Comes to Charleston

Alteño comes from the highlands of Jalisco, Mexico, a name that pays tribute to Chef Johnny Curiel's father and his heritage.

The restaurant comes from Chef Johnny Curiel and Casie Curiel, whose Denver restaurants have earned national attention, including Michelin recognition. Bringing their vision to Charleston adds another interesting layer to The Charlee and to the neighborhood around Cannon Street.

As an architect in Charleston, I love seeing projects like this bring something new to the city while becoming part of an existing neighborhood.

Designing a Destination

The architecture is only one piece of the puzzle. A successful restaurant has to create an experience, from the food and hospitality to the interiors and the way people move through the space.

Agatha Janes Interiors out of Denver has been thoughtfully shaping the interior, while Lennon Construction has been bringing those ideas to life.

Now that construction is nearing the finish line, it's exciting to see all those pieces starting to come together.

And that's what I love about Buildings Are Cool. A building isn't really finished when construction ends. It's finished when people start using it, gathering there, and creating memories.

I'm looking forward to seeing what Alteño brings to Charleston's dining scene.
