Why Seeing People Enjoy My Designs Is the Best Part of Being an Architect
One of the best questions I've ever been asked didn't come from a client or another architect, it came from a group of fourth through eighth graders during Career Day at James Simons Montessori.
They asked me, "What do you like most about being an architect?"
I had to stop and think because there are so many things I enjoy about this profession.
I love starting with a blank sheet of paper and turning ideas into something tangible. I'm grateful that I get to draw, solve problems, and be creative every day. There's also something incredibly rewarding about hearing a client say, "I love the design." And I won't lie, watching contractors bring those drawings to life is always exciting.
But if I had to choose just one favorite part, it's this:
Seeing people actually use and enjoy the spaces we've created.
When a Design Comes to Life
Architecture is a profession that requires patience.
Most of my commercial projects take around five years from the first conversation to the day the doors open. Residential projects are often a year or more. That's a lot of time spent sketching, refining, coordinating, and imagining what a place could become.
When you work on a project for that long, it's easy to become attached to every detail. But the building isn't truly complete until people fill it with life.
The grand opening of The Charlee at 89 Cannon Street was one of those moments.
Watching friends, families, and visitors walk through the building, gather in the courtyard, explore the spaces, and create new memories reminded me why I became an architect in the first place.
That's the real reward.
Buildings Are Cool Because of the People Inside Them
At Buildings Are Cool, I enjoy sharing the stories behind architecture, but the truth is that buildings become interesting because of the people who use them.
Great architecture isn't just about beautiful facades or thoughtful floor plans. It's about creating places where people can connect, celebrate, work, live, and build community.
As one of the architects in Charleston, that's always my goal, to design places that people genuinely enjoy long after construction is finished.
