From a Walk with My Dog to an Award-Winning Building: The Story of The Charlee at 89 Cannon Street
Some of the best projects don't begin in a boardroom, they begin with a simple idea.
Five years ago, I was walking my dog, Buckminster, through Charleston when I noticed a "For Sale" sign at the corner of Cannon Street. I texted my soon-to-be business partner, David Betts: "How about we do something on this site?" Luckily, he was just crazy enough to say yes.
That one message eventually became The Charlee at 89 Cannon Street, and today I'm honored that it received a Carolopolis Award for New Construction from the Preservation Society of Charleston.
Designing for Charleston
As one of the architects in Charleston, I believe new buildings should respect the city's history while contributing something meaningful for the future. In a place known for its historic architecture, designing new construction comes with both opportunity and responsibility.
From the first sketch to the finished building, every decision was made with the goal of creating a place that feels like it truly belongs on Cannon Street.
Great Buildings Are Built by Great Teams
Projects like this are never the work of one person. They happen because talented developers, engineers, contractors, designers, craftsmen, and countless collaborators come together around a shared vision.
I'm incredibly grateful to everyone who helped bring this project to life. Receiving this award is a celebration of the entire team.
Why I Love Architecture
